Job Description:

Purpose:

A waste management company is seeking a Landfill Manager who is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of a Class A landfill site, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, waste management license requirements, health, safety and environmental standards, while effectively managing operational resources, budgets and the site operations team

Key Job Outputs:

  • Forecast and monitor operational expenditure and budgets for manpower, materials and equipment
  • Build, lead and manage the operations team while developing talent and optimising team performance
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Class A landfill site in compliance with environmental legislation and the site's Waste Management Licence
  • Oversee waste reception, classification and disposal to maximise waste diversion from landfill
  • Ensure compliance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEM) and all applicable permits and regulations
  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly and annual compliance and performance reports to the relevant authorities
  • Implement and maintain Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) management system
  • Ensure compliance with landfill permitting requirements and waste management regulations
  • Monitor landfill operations to ensure adherence to waste acceptance criteria
  • Manage leachate collection and leak detection systems
  • Oversee landfill gas management activities
  • Support geotechnical investigations relating to liner and foundation design
  • Ensure effective environmental monitoring and compliance reporting
  • Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Promote a safe working environment and compliance with company policies and procedures


Core Competencies:

  • Knowledge of double composite liner systems (HDPE + clay, permeability ≤1×10⁻⁹ m/s)
  • Understanding of GNR 635 waste assessment (TC and LC thresholds)
  • Ability to enforce waste acceptance criteria per GNR 636
  • Experience with leachate collection and leak detection systems
  • Knowledge of landfill gas management (GNR 924)
  • Familiarity with geotechnical investigations for liner and foundation design
  • Competence in monitoring and compliance reporting

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering or equivalent


Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role; ideally within Landfill environment with at least 3 years in a managerial position
  • In-depth knowledge of the NEM: Waste Act, Waste Classification and management regulations, and landfill permitting requirements
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Sage
  • Knowledge of an IMS system (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001)
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills
  • Strong time management, prioritisation, and reporting capabilities
  • Valid Driver’s License
